Effectively proposed by Emirates Thalassemia Society, in cooperation with the Dubai Thalassemia Center and Officers Club of Dubai Police, an Awareness Sports Marathon was organized in 2006 aiming to spread Thalassemia awareness in the community. The marathon attracted over 1300 participating runners. Despite the heated weather, the Thalassemia patients, representatives of the Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Thalassemia Society, Dr Abdullah Al-Khayat, Director of then called Al- Wasl Hospital (Latifa Hospital) enthusiastically participated in the marathon and made the event successful and popular by the themselves and the, has honored the winners and the first winner was one of the Thalassemia patients, the matter that delivers important message that Thalassemia patient is effective person in the community and capable of practicing his life normally like any sound person.
